February Student of the Month: Andrew Mchowell

Mauna LoaStudent of the Month

Full Name: Andrew Bryan Mchowell

Age: 32

Where are you from?

Huntington Beach, Ca

What stage of your training are you?

Two months into my private pilot.

What point in your life did you know you wanted to fly helicopters?

My first time flying doors off for my job as a photographer. From then on, I found every excuse to shoot from the air.

What is your favorite helicopter to fly?

I only have experience in the 22, but to be exact, I’ve had my best flights in Kilo Charlie.

What obstacles have you had to overcome to get where you are today?

My career as a photographer led me to helicopters. So I would have to say overcoming obstacles that come with the responsibility of owning your own business.

Where do you hope your training will take you? Goals?

I picture myself going through the entire MLH program. After completion, my plan is to work in the industry for a year. My goal is to be a professional pilot, while keeping my career as a full time photographer. I think bridging that gap between photographers and pilots on photography/cinematography flights, would lead to successful branch of my photography business.

What advice would you give to people just starting out in there training?

Punctuality. Show up early, if you’re on time you’re already late. Briefing yourself prior to ground / flight and being prepared for the session is key. Also, GoPro every flight. Having that footage can save time/money and it’s a great way to break up the monotony of ready FAR’S.

What has been your favorite experience while flying with MLH?

I really enjoy practicing autorotations, also preflighting during sunrise!

How did you pick MLH?

I simply wanted the best school and environment to learn the craft. I also flew with MLH several years prior for photo charters before starting as a student and always enjoyed the staff.

Whats your favorite thing about flying in Hawaii/ at MLH?

Flying in a busy airspace with such diverse aircraft is pretty neat. Also, you can’t beat the scenery.
