In a pioneering collaboration, Portland, Oregon-based Augmented Island Studios and Kona, Hawaii-based Mauna Loa Helicopters unveil a cutting-edge Augmented Reality (AR) app to transform the landscape of helicopter pilot training. Developed with the pedagogical insights of Mauna Loa Helicopters and the technological expertise of Augmented Island Studios, this app introduces a new era in aviation education.

Key features of the app include:

  1. Visualization of Aerodynamics and Maneuvers Concepts: Students can visualize complex helicopter aerodynamics and maneuvers concepts in their surroundings, providing a new dimension to learning.
  2. Pre-Flight Procedures: Students can launch an AR helicopter in their space, learning and practicing pre-flight procedures for the Robinson R22 helicopter.
  3. Hover Practice Mini-Sim Game: An engaging game that reinforces the importance of micro-movements in helicopter flight, making learning more interactive.

Available for tablets and mobile phones on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store, this app promises to redefine the educational experience for aspiring pilots. AR Helicopter Training allows users to explore and internalize crucial concepts through the use of augmented reality. Non-AR 3D versions of the aerodynamics and maneuvers lessons can be selected through the settings button of the app.

Mauna Loa Helicopters’ President, Ben Fouts, expressed the transformative potential of spatial computing in training: “For students to visualize these complex helicopter aerodynamics concepts and see wind currents, wingtip vortices, and maneuvers, from every angle is a game-changer in helicopter pilot training.”

Enrique Sánchez-Rivera, CEO of Augmented Island Studios, emphasized, “This partnership marks the intersection of aviation education and state-of-the-art technology. We’re not merely instructing pilots; we’re defining the trajectory of training. Research indicates that AR enriches students’ engagement, motivation, attention, interactivity, concentration, knowledge retention, and spatial abilities. Additionally, it enhances information accessibility. We are thrilled to invite all those eager to explore the intricacies of helicopter training through our app, AR Helicopter Training. Our app was developed for beginner helicopter pilots, but all curious minds are welcome to explore it!”
