Helicopter Training Student of the Month: Zack Chamberlin

Name?
Zack Chamberlin

Current ratings?
Private Pilot and Instrument

Where are you from?
I’m originally the San Francisco Bay Area where I was born and raised. Most recently San Diego.

What point in your life did you know you wanted to fly helicopters?
A neighbor was a helicopter salesman and landed a Eurocopter in the front yard. I got to go for a 15 minute ride and was hooked!

What is your favorite to fly?
The R44

What obstacles have you had to overcome to get where you are today?
I would say the biggest obstacle has been figuring out the financial side, it took me two years of planning. I set up a business to cover the expenses and still work online to cover the costs. I have a whole team back home that makes it work for me.

Where do you hope your training will take you?
I want to fly tours right here in Hawaii. I can’t imagine a better job. I want to show people how amazing the Hawaiian Islands are.

What advice would you give to people just starting out in their training?
I would tell new students to be prepared to work incredibly hard. You’re going to get up early, stay up late, and stress about the financial commitment. Training is difficult and there will be days you wonder if you made the right choice, but with each check ride and accomplishment you will know you are on the right path.

What has been your favorite experience while flying with MLH?
My commercial cross-country has been the highlight so far.

Helicopter Training Student of the Month: Zack ChamberlinHow did you pick MLH?
Mauna Loa Helicopters has one of the best reputations in the industry and I appreciate the high standards.

What’s your favorite thing about flying in Hawaii/at MLH?
I like doing the night flights, night cross-country, and seeing the whales. The attitudes of the staff, flight instructors, and other students are really welcoming. Everyone makes you feel welcome and that’s really helpful when you’re far from home. The scenery and WX isn’t bad either!
