Who are you flying for currently?
I am a Utility/Firefighting Pilot at Guardian Helicopters in Alberta, Canada
What kind of helicopter(s) do you fly?
206B3, 206L3, AS350B3, UH-1H
What do you find unique, challenging, or fulfilling about your job?

Flying the line in mountainous terrain. Firefighting. There are new techniques and lessons to learn every day.

Was there anything in particular that you learned at MLH that made you especially ready for a situation you have encountered since attending?

I learned a lot from Mauna Loa as a student/instructor. It was definitely a great place for off-airport flying, as well as navigation between islands and learning different airport environments. Flying in Hawaii taught me a great deal about high winds and mountainous terrain as well.

What did you like best about MLH?

They did an exceptional job. I liked flying to other islands and learning each island and it’s own uniqueness. I’d recommend flying on every island and learning the Hawaiian Island chain. When else can you experience such amazing flying, scenery and sea-life!

Would you recommend Mauna Loa to others?

Absolutely.

Do you have any other comments or suggestions for those just beginning in the industry?

If at first you don’t succeed, try try again. Learning to fly is like a roller coaster (many ups and downs). But you’ll make it to your goal with persistence and good work ethic. Fly smart and fly safe.
