Jen Martinez a Texas native currently training in her Commercial/CFI rating received a call one afternoon “that was a breath of fresh air!” Jen was awarded a Pinky & JOE Brier Foundation Scholarship. “A referral from a friend who was awarded this scholarship in the previous year” is how Jen learned about this Foundation. This is a scholarship for women in the fields of aviation and maritime transportation.
Jen shared obstacles she has overcome to be where she is today, “Finances & time! Unfortunately, these are the biggest boulders in my path to overcome however scholarships such as The Pinky & Joe Brier Foundation lessens the load & help make my aviation career dream a reality. I am completely grateful!”
“Striving to become a better pilot; a safer & more efficient pilot remains as my daily goal. By doing so, I hope this takes me to join the utility helicopter world, where opportunities such as emergency evacuation, firefighting operations, relocating wildlife, removing/installing AC units on top of buildings, & many others await.” A lady with goals, Jen was enthusiastic about telling us her path. She also provided a bit of advice to others who are applying for flight training scholarships, “Get involved with your community, & if it’s part of joining your local aviation community via a club or non-profit organization, even better! Volunteerism not only looks good on your application but provides help to those in need or to the cause while stimulating your personal growth. It’s a win-win! Also READ & FOLLOW the instructions thoroughly of the scholarship you are applying for. If the organization is requesting 2 letters of recommendation & a 300-word essay, then give them exactly that, not a 299 or 301-word essay with 1 letter of recommendation. Lastly, apply for all scholarships you are eligible for. Even if you think there are too many applicants & you won’t have a chance, apply anyway. You won’t win, if you never play.”
Congratulations Jen! We are so happy to have you as apart of our MLH Ohana! Looking forward to seeing you continue to succeed in your flight training path!
