December 2019 Student of the Month
Meet Xavier Altamirano, age 41, from New Mexico.
To end the year, Xavier Altamirano from Las Cruces New Mexico was selected as Kona’s December Student of the Month. Xavier tells us ” I am 25 years with 16 years experience” (41YO) he says with a chuckle. Xavier is currently working on his Private rating, he knew helicopters was his career choice when ” I was in elementary school and took my first helicopter ride around the town. Got a lot of helicopter rides in the Marines which fueled the fire to want to fly even more. I retired, then I set my goal to become a helicopter pilot.”
When asked what his favorite helicopter to fly is, Xavier in his jokingly fashion replied with “Hard to pick out from all the Robinson R-22s I’ve ever flown. I’ve only flown R-22s.” Talking about obstacles Xavier shares a few he has overcome ” In terms of flying, I’ve had fixed-wing experience from Ohio. The crummy weather being the biggest challenge from flying. Learning some of the flying maneuvers for the first time too, but not too much else.” His long term goals? ” I studied wildlife science, so working with the US Forest Service or Wildlife and Game would be sweet. Maybe EMS. I’d be happy cruising around in tours too.”
What advice would you give to people just starting out in there training? “Listen, study, ask questions, don’t be afraid to ask for help and repetition.”
Xavier’s favorite experience while flying with MLH? “The scenery. Even saw a whale.” His favorite thing about flying in Hawaii in general, “Aside from the scenery and year-round warm weather, the laid back atmosphere and professional instruction from top-notch instructors. “
When asked, why did you pick MLH over other flight schools he shared ” I did a lot of research and went to a handful of helicopter schools across the US. After coming to MLH and took a flight, I immediately knew this was where I wanted to attend flight training. Weather conditions here in Kona played a huge part too.”
Keep up the great work Xavier! Looking forward to seeing you succeed in the Professional Pilot Program!
