Natalie LeeStudent of the Month

At Mauna Loa Helicopters, we are always thrilled to highlight our students’ unique journeys and achievements. This month, we’re excited to introduce Chris Lange, a passionate and driven student from Colfax, California. His story inspires not only aspiring pilots but anyone with a desire to learn and grow.

Inspired by Firefighting

Chris’s interest in helicopters was sparked close to home—literally. Growing up in the small town of Colfax, Chris witnessed Cal Fire helicopters slinging water buckets over a nearby wildfire. The powerful sight of these helicopters in action, helping protect his community, ignited a dream in him. That was when he knew he wanted to become a helicopter pilot and use his skills to make a difference.

A Lifelong Learner

What continues to drive Chris in his journey isn’t just the thrill of flying and the endless learning opportunities. He’s realized that becoming a helicopter pilot is about far more than just mastering the mechanics of flight—it’s a career that challenges you to grow constantly.

“There’s always more to learn,” Chris says. “From where I’m sitting now, you can continue learning forever.”

Curiousness and a desire for knowledge have been key in his progress through flight school, and they will no doubt continue to fuel his success as a pilot.

Why Chris Chose Mauna Loa Helicopters

When it came time to choose a flight school, Chris did his research and selected Mauna Loa Helicopters for several reasons. Our reputation for excellent reviews, a variety of available helicopters, consistent flying weather, and the incredible opportunity to experience life in Hawaii all played a part in his decision.

Living and training in Hawaii has offered Chris more than just great weather—it’s given him a chance to explore flying in diverse conditions and stunning landscapes, experiences that will serve him well in his future career.

What’s Next for Chris

Chris is in the final stages of his Certified Flight Instructor Instrument (CFII) training and will graduate soon. His long-term goals include firefighting and mountain search and rescue operations, which align perfectly with his original inspiration. However, Chris is keeping an open mind about other potential paths within the helicopter industry.

“There are so many different directions being a helicopter pilot can take you,” he says, “and I’m excited to explore them all.”

A Bright Future Ahead

We have no doubt that Chris’s passion, dedication, and thirst for knowledge will take him far in his helicopter career. We are proud to be part of his journey and look forward to watching him achieve his goals, whether battling wildfires, rescuing people in need, or exploring the many other exciting possibilities.
