March 2019 Student of the Month
Meet Lora Krystyna Trout, age 28, from Colorado. Working on Commercial/CFI
What point in your life did you know you wanted to fly helicopters?
Flying helicopters was always the answer when people asked me what I wanted to do, but that thought became more serious as I worked with more and more pilots fighting fires on helitack crews.
What is your favorite helicopter to fly?
I’ve only ever flown the R-22! But I would love to fly an A-Star 🙂
What obstacles have you had to overcome to get where you are today?
The biggest obstacle is fighting fires in the fire season in order to continue to fund flight school.
Eventually I want to fly for fire and also be shorthaul qualified for utility work or medical extraction.
Read various outside sources to gain understandings of topics and apply it in your training. Take school seriously and get it done.
Learning the 180 auto for sure!
How did you pick MLH?
The pilot who flew for my shorthaul fire crew had also gone to Mauna Loa years ago and had nothing but good things to say about the school and his experience. He connected me with an older chief pilot, Noah, to get a better understanding of the current status of the school, and that ultimately helped me make the decision.
Whats your favorite thing about flying in Hawaii/ at MLH?
EVERYTHING! The blue water, the whales and dolphins, the lava flows! How it’s always warm! The schedule! The instructors! The drastic changes in terrain and vegetation to fly through. The historical flight aspects all around. It’s all so nice.
