Ben Frisius

Electronic News Gathering, Angel City Air
Los Angeles, CA
Who are you flying for currently?
I am a Electronic News Gathering at Angel City Air in Los Angeles, CA
Where are you flying and for what company?

From 2006 to 2009 (I was a student and than became an instructor).

What ratings do you hold?
I completed the Professional Program CFI/CFII.
Where are you flying and for what company?

Angel City Air (an Electronic News Gathering co that flies for CBS channel 9, 2, or 15)) and Summit Helicopters (utility style work).

What kind of helicopter(s) do you fly?
Astar 350 and MD500.
What do you find unique, challenging, or fulfilling about your job?

For the news company I am flying a busy airspace over LA and it’s especially difficult when there is a news break. I must pay extra attention to other helicopters around trying to get the right photo angle and doing the same story. For Summit Helicopters I do government long lining and power lines construction which is by nature very challenging.

Was there anything in particular that you learned at MLH that made you especially ready for a situation you have encountered since attending?

The family feel is great. All the instructors are good people. Ben runs a good business and the school has the 141 program down to a science. You always knew where you stood and what came next as compared to other schools.

Would you recommend Mauna Loa to others?

Absolutely! In fact I already have. For me it was definitely the best choice of school. I highly appreciate the diverse training environment and the one on one instruction.

Do you have any other comments or suggestions for those just beginning in the industry?

It takes dedication and hard work. It’s like going to college. It involves study and hard work. Being in Hawaii is the fun part.
