2004-2005
KHNL TV (Engineer) & Genesis Aviation (Pilot/Ground Support).
I am employed by the local NBC affiliate and was brought into helicopters by Genesis Aviation (Chopper 8) who referred me to MLH for formal training. I have been very lucky having the opportunity to fly turbine aircraft at the same time I was in training. However, the learning continues and the time builds.
As an engineer in management, I have the flexibility to pursue my aviation career. In aviation, I have met many new people with a feeling of community among pilots, mechanics, ground support, office staff, etc. I had no real expectations so everything has been new, exciting, and fun. You never know whats going to happen next. However, the longer I continue, the better I get a handle on this industry.
The instructors were very familiar with the region so as a pilot in Hawaii, I’m better prepared for this specific area.
The family atmosphere. I built lasting relationships with both students and colleagues. We all worked hard and played hard while having the time of our lives. Hawaii is the place in the world to fly. OK, so I’m biased. Varied flying conditions including over water operations, mountain flying, altitude, high wind, etc… A lot for someone starting out in aviation. My instructors were very professional yet I was able to communicate in a very relaxed manner. Since I am beginning a second career starting at age 44, it felt a little strange being a minimum of 10 years older than most folks at MLH but I was very comfortable throughout the whole experience.
Do your research about the industry beyond the “thrill”. Ask those already in it. Patience, patience, patience. Once you decide to start, keep going. Keep going, it pays off eventually.
