At Mauna Loa Helicopters, we take pride in training the next generation of professional aviators with the skills, confidence, and real-world readiness to thrive in demanding flight environments. One of our recent graduates, Rigel, is a shining example of what’s possible with dedication and high-quality training.
Rigel enrolled in our Professional Pilot Program in February 2021 and completed the intensive curriculum in just 13 months, graduating in March 2022. Throughout his training at Mauna Loa, Rigel displayed a strong work ethic, technical aptitude, and a true passion for rotorcraft aviation. His journey from new student to professional pilot reflects the immersive, hands-on training environment we provide here in the Hawaiian Islands.
Today, Rigel is flying with Pollux Aviation, the largest Robinson helicopter operator in the United States. Based in Alaska, Pollux Aviation specializes in demanding utility missions in some of the country’s most rugged and remote terrain. Their operations include everything from external load work (“slinging”) and government research flights, to forestry support, aerial tours, and more. While they do nearly everything short of fire suppression, each mission demands precision, resilience, and the ability to adapt—qualities Rigel honed during his training at Mauna Loa.
Flying in Alaska is no small feat. The environment is unforgiving, the logistics are complex, and the expectations for pilots are high. Rigel’s ability to step into such a dynamic role so quickly after graduation speaks volumes about both his capabilities and the depth of preparation he received during his time with us.
His success story is one of many that show how Mauna Loa Helicopters does more than teach students to fly—we prepare them for the real world of helicopter operations. Our Professional Pilot Program offers a structured, immersive path from first flight to commercial readiness, all set against the diverse terrain and airspace of the Hawaiian Islands. It’s an ideal launchpad for those who want to fly for a living—whether that means tours, utility work, EMS, or beyond.
If you’re considering a career in helicopter aviation and want the best possible foundation, Rigel’s journey shows where Mauna Loa Helicopters can take you. From island skies to the Alaskan frontier—your adventure starts here.
