From Kauai to Ketchikan: Tyler Schump’s Helicopter Journey from Student to Utility Pilot in Alaska
At our flight school, every graduate has a unique story of dedication, challenge, and triumph—but few have a journey as inspiring as that of Tyler Schump. Born and raised on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, Tyler always had an adventurous spirit. His roots in the rugged landscapes of the Hawaiian islands planted the seed for a future in aviation, and his love for the outdoors soon translated into a passion for helicopters.
Today, Tyler is flying high with TEMSCO Helicopters in Ketchikan, Alaska, piloting the MD500 and Airbus AStar helicopters. His work is as demanding as it is rewarding—conducting fish and wildlife surveys, performing cell tower repeater maintenance, and supporting a variety of utility operations across the untamed terrain of Southeast Alaska.
Flying in Alaska: Where Skill Meets Scenery
Flying in Southeast Alaska is not for the faint of heart. With rapidly changing weather, mountainous terrain, and dense forest canopies, the region is one of the most technically challenging environments for helicopter operations in the U.S. Yet for Tyler, it’s a perfect match. He describes it as “a very challenging and equally fun place to fly.” His days are spent weaving through clouds and navigating some of the most breathtaking wilderness on the continent—all while performing critical missions that help support remote communities and protect natural resources.
Training Through Adversity
Tyler’s path to becoming a professional pilot was not without obstacles. He joined our flight school at a time of global uncertainty, beginning his training just before the COVID-19 pandemic upended nearly every aspect of life. With shutdowns, travel restrictions, and heightened health precautions, flight training became significantly more complicated. Yet Tyler remained focused and determined.
In just 19 months, even amid pandemic disruptions, he completed our full program—a testament to his work ethic, resilience, and passion for aviation. His ability to overcome adversity and remain committed to his goals is part of what makes him a standout alum.
